What water does to Norfolk locks

NOAA's Virginia summary describes a humid climate with very warm summers, and about 50 inches of precipitation falls each year on the tidewater coast. Water reaches a lock here in three ways:

• Damp air. Wooden doors swell in summer. A deadbolt that slides easily in January can drag on its strike by August, and people force the key to make up the difference.
• Rain. A keyway that faces the weather collects water and grit, and the springs and pins inside begin to corrode.
• Tidal water. NOAA reports that sea level at Sewells Point rose 17 inches between 1927 and 2020, and the city's September 2026 flood parking notice named Hampton Boulevard among the streets with tidal flooding. A lock that stood in that water may turn roughly afterward.
