When a fob problem is really the weather

Colorado State University's Colorado Climate Center describes large day-to-night temperature changes across Colorado, and says chinook winds can raise temperatures on the high plains 25 to 35°F within a short time. The small coin cell in a key fob loses capacity as it cools, so a fob that has been weak for months may quit on a cold morning and seem fine again by afternoon. Before deciding a fob has lost its programming:

1. Replace the battery with the exact size printed on the old one.
2. Try the fob right next to the car; a weak battery shortens range first.
3. For a push-button start car, check the owner's manual for the spot where a fob with a flat battery can still be read.

If a fresh battery does not help, or a new or replacement fob has to be paired with the car, that is key fob programming.

Where the car sits during the job

Programming happens at the vehicle, through its own systems, so the parking spot matters. Most downtown on-street spaces carry a city time limit, which makes a downtown curb a poor place for a job that may run long. What to have ready

• Every fob and key for the car, working or not. On some vehicles, programming a new fob erases any fob that is not present, so a fob left at home could stop working.
• The VIN, printed on the registration and on a plate at the base of the windshield.
• The year, make, model and trim, and whether the car has push-button start.
• Photo ID and the registration, so the car can be shown to be yours.
• The new fob, if you bought one, with its part number; not every fob that looks right is compatible.
