Where the older locks are

The Old North End Historic District, north of Colorado College, has houses built between 1885 and 1965, many from 1890 to 1910, in styles from Georgian Revival to Mission and Bungalow. On doors that old, a repair or lock rekeying keeps more of the original wood than a full hardware swap.

The 1889–90 annexations brought in Seavey's Addition, the East End and another North End addition. Old Colorado City, founded on August 13, 1859, as the first Pikes Peak region settlement, was incorporated into Colorado Springs in 1917 and became known as the West Side.

The Broadmoor Land Company built the Broadmoor suburb in 1891. The Broadmoor Addition, Cheyenne Cañon, Ivywild, Skyway and Stratton Meadows were annexed on October 1, 1981. An annexation date says little about when a given house was built, so describe the door and lock rather than relying on the address.

Storefronts and key boxes

The Old Colorado Historic Commercial District, listed on the National Register in 1982, covers 27 properties, mostly along Colorado Avenue between 24th and 26th streets, many of them two-story red brick buildings from around 1900. For commercial locksmith work there, or in any building with a monitored fire suppression or detection system, check for a Knox box first.

Colorado Springs Fire Department guidance calls for approved rapid entry equipment on those buildings, on any structure where secured openings make access unduly difficult, and where immediate access is needed, such as locked apartment buildings. Only Knox products are approved, and residential-type boxes are not allowed on commercial properties. The box holds two labeled sets of six to ten keys, plus codes or key cards for electronic locks, and the department highly recommends master keying. Fire Department personnel complete the lockup, so a rekey that changes those keys needs the department to lock up the new set.

Driving and parking in Colorado Springs

Downtown meters cover the area bordered by Boulder Street, Nevada Avenue, Vermijo Street and Cascade Avenue, and a vehicle may not stay at a meter longer than 24 hours. The city also runs the City Administration Building, Kiowa and Cascade garages; for a car lockout downtown, give the garage name and level.

At 6,035 feet, the city averages 38 inches of snow a season; March is the snowiest month. Chinook winds bring winter warm spells and sharp day-to-day temperature swings, so a lock that was wet in the afternoon can be frozen by morning. If a key will not turn, stop rather than force it; a snapped key means a broken key extraction.

Local rules worth knowing

Short-term rentals. Colorado Springs requires an active short-term rental permit for any property listed on a hosting platform. Under City Code Section 7.5.1702, the permit is issued to a specific owner and does not run with the property. Each rental needs a point of contact on file with the Planning Department who can respond within one hour in an emergency, and the permit and Good Neighbor Guidelines listing that contact must be displayed prominently in the unit.
