The city's 2020 Housing Strategy says Aurora's population rose 325 percent in the 1950s and more than doubled in the 1970s. Census estimates for 2024 count about 160,000 homes, roughly 44 percent built between 1970 and 1989. The Housing Strategy places the oldest neighborhoods in the west near the Denver line, mostly 1980s and 1990s homes east of I-225 to Buckley, and the newest construction around E-470.

Deadbolts in the city code

Aurora City Code Sec. 22-190 says every exterior door of a dwelling unit (hotels and motels excepted) must have a deadbolt unless the fire code prohibits it, and a door between the house and an attached garage counts as an exterior door. The deadbolt must have no spring action, work by key from outside and by knob or thumb turn from inside, and sit no higher than 48 inches above the finished floor. Exterior sliding glass doors need a locking bar or a pin or bolt device. The section applies to structures with building permits issued on or after September 1, 1983. Heather Gardens, a 55-and-over community near I-225 and Cherry Creek State Park, has more than 2,400 condominiums, townhomes and patio homes. Under the city's Housing Code, owners must keep the parts of a building they control safe, including shared areas in buildings with two or more units (Sec. 22-571). Check with the association or manager before work on a lobby, garage or mailroom door.
