Cold and fob batteries

A key fob runs on a small battery, and cold weakens batteries. NOAA puts Connecticut's average January temperature at 27.2°F, so a fob that behaved in October may misbehave in January.

Signs of a tired battery include a shorter range, buttons that need repeated presses and, on some vehicles, a low-battery message on the dashboard. Replace the battery before assuming the fob needs programming. Some vehicles need the fob paired again afterward, and some do not, so note what happens once the battery is fresh.

A fob dropped in slush or soaked in a coat pocket may stop working until it dries. Take the battery out and let the fob dry before trying again. In waterfront areas such as Shippan Point, a fob that has been wet with salt water may leave residue on the battery contacts, so mention it if that applies.

Where the car sits

Programming happens at the car, so its location is part of the request.

• Garages. In a multi-level garage, name the garage and its level, and say whether the car will stay where it is.
• Narrow streets. After a snowfall of more than two inches, alternate-side parking applies automatically on certain narrow streets. Say which side the car is on and whether it will have to be moved.

What to have ready

• Every working fob and key for the vehicle. On many vehicles, new fobs are paired together with the existing ones, so a fob left at home can complicate the job.
• The VIN, and the year, make and model.
• Proof that the vehicle is yours, such as a registration or title, and photo ID.
• A description of what fails. Does one button fail, or does the fob do nothing at all? Does the car have push-button start, or does it use a key with buttons?
