Proving the car is yours

A car key both opens and starts a vehicle, so ownership papers come first. Have these ready:

• The title or current registration, and photo ID, both in your name.
• The vehicle identification number (VIN), printed on the registration and visible through the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side.

• Bunker Hill, west of River Street and east of the Passaic River, is mostly industrial. A work vehicle there may sit inside a yard or behind a gate, so say who can open it.

Street parking and lost keys

If every key is gone there is no original to copy, and the car may sit where it is until a new one exists. This is general information, not legal advice. Under Section 435-131 of Paterson's code, an unoccupied vehicle left on a street during that street's designated street-cleaning day and time can be towed, and the owner pays for its removal and storage. What to have ready

1. Year, make and model, plus whether the car uses a metal key, a remote key or a push-button start with a fob.
2. Whether any working key still exists, since copying one is simpler than making one from nothing.
