The Trenton Historical Society counts eight city historic districts, six of them residential in character. It notes colonial-era Federal-style buildings in the Mill Hill, Hanover/Academy and Greenwood/Hamilton districts, along with later Greek Revival, Italianate, French Second Empire and Victorian styles. To keep an original door, ask whether its lock can be rekeyed or repaired before replacing it.

The master plan calls State Street downtown's spine, linking the Transit Center, the Downtown Core, Old Trenton and the State Complex, and notes that the Downtown Core holds numerous state office buildings. It credits Warren Street and West Lafayette Street with attracting stable businesses.

For a storefront or office in the State House, South Warren or another historic district, rekeying leaves the outside unchanged, but a replacement door or new street-side hardware may count as an exterior alteration. Tenants should also check which doors their lease lets them change before requesting commercial locksmith work.

Car trouble in Trenton

Under subsection 14-2.10 of the city code, once snow covers the street, no vehicle may park on listed major roadways, including North and South Broad Street, Brunswick Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Greenwood Avenue and the Clinton Avenues. The ban lasts after the snow stops, until those streets are plowed enough for normal traffic. The police director can also declare an emergency and post temporary no-parking signs. Mention it if a locked car or lost key leaves you stuck on one of these routes during a storm.

The Trenton Parking Authority runs the Warren Street, South Broad and Front Street, Lafayette and Liberty Commons garages and the Merchant Street lot. The Trenton Downtown Association notes that vehicles cannot be reached once a garage or lot closes, and lists the Warren Street Garage and Merchant Street lot as closed on weekends. If a key goes missing in the evening, check the facility's hours before arranging car key replacement.

Local rules worth knowing

Historic districts. The City Landmarks Commission designates historic districts and individual landmarks with City Council's concurrence, and reviews all exterior alterations to them. Check with the city before changing a front door or visible hardware.

Change of ownership. Section 132-109 of the city code requires a Certificate of Housing Code Compliance from the Division of Housing Inspections before a residential property changes ownership. It covers zoning and fire safety codes, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, electrical and plumbing standards, and habitability, not who still holds old keys, so rekeying after closing is a separate step.
