Does your door suit a smart lock?

Most smart deadbolts are made for a standard bored door: a round hole through the face and a smaller bolt hole in the edge. An original door in Eastside Park, where about 1,000 period-style homes stand east of downtown, may use a mortise lock instead. A few smart locks are made to work with a mortise body; otherwise, fitting a bored smart deadbolt means drilling a door you may prefer to keep as it is.

Rentals and multi-unit buildings

This is general information, not legal advice. Where a building has three or more units, N.J.A.C. 5:10-19.2 requires each unit entrance door to have a medium-duty dead-latching lockset or a separate deadbolt, a chain door guard and, on the main entrance, a viewer. The landlord must supply those locks, so anything that replaces that hardware is the owner's decision. Get written approval before changing anything.

Paterson's code also requires every exit door in the buildings it covers to open easily from the inside (Section 271-27). Pick a model with a plain thumbturn, so the door opens from inside without a code, a phone or a key.

Cold, humidity and batteries

NOAA's summary puts average January lows across New Jersey between 15 and 30 °F by region, and summers are warm and humid. Batteries deliver less power in the cold, so a lock that ran fine all fall can start warning of low power in January.

• Change batteries at the first warning rather than waiting for the lock to stop.
• If the keypad faces the street, check the maker's stated temperature range before buying.
• Keep a mechanical key or another backup entry method, and store that key somewhere other than inside the house.

What to include in a request
