A key fob is a coin-cell battery and a small circuit board in a plastic shell. Cold weakens a coin cell, so a fob can fail on a winter morning and seem fine again once it warms in your pocket, and slush that gets past a cracked case can corrode the battery contacts.

Start with a fresh battery of the size printed on the old one. If the buttons still do nothing, or the car will not recognize the fob at all, the fob may need key fob programming or replacement. A fob that is lost rather than failing calls for car key replacement instead.
