Anyone inside comes first

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked in the car, call 911 before anything else, in any season. NOAA's climate summary describes New Jersey summers as warm and humid, and a closed car gets hotter than the air outside. In winter a car that is off loses its heat.

Locked out on a snow route

Subsection 14-2.10 of Trenton's city code bars parking on listed major roadways once snow covers the street. The list includes North and South Broad Street, Brunswick, Hamilton and Greenwood avenues and the Clinton Avenues. The ban continues after the snow stops, until the streets are plowed enough for normal traffic, and the police director may also declare an emergency and post temporary no-parking signs. A car with its keys inside on one of those routes during a storm is parked where it cannot stay, so say so when you ask for help with a car lockout. This is general information, not legal advice.

Locked out in a downtown garage

A garage or lot sets a hard deadline: the Trenton Downtown Association notes that no one can reach a vehicle once the facility closes. If you are locked out in the Lafayette or Liberty Commons garage late in the day, find its closing time before you plan anything, because the car may stay out of reach until it reopens.

Details to send for a lockout

• Location. Street and nearest cross street, or the garage name and level.
• Snow status. Whether the car is on a listed snow route or under a temporary no-parking sign.
• The car. Make, model, year and color.
• Where the keys are. Visible on the seat, in the trunk, in the ignition, or lost. If they are lost, you need car key replacement rather than a lockout.
• Anyone inside. Say so even after calling 911.
