Old doors, newer locks

Alexandria's older front doors come in recognizable styles. The Old and Historic Alexandria District, established in 1946, generally runs from Hunting Creek north to Bashford Lane and from the Potomac River west to near the King Street Metro. The city's design guidelines for the district date front doors by style:

• Federal, 1780–1830. Six wood panels, often with sidelites beside the door and a semicircular or elliptical fanlite over it.
• Victorian, 1850–1910. Often wood panels below and glass above.

Glass within reach of the lock, whether in a Victorian upper panel or a Federal sidelite, affects which deadbolt suits the door, so mention it up front.

Del Ray, St. Elmo and their neighbors

The Town of Potomac Historic District covers six subdivisions: Del Ray, Del Ray II, St. Elmo, Abingdon, Hume and parts of Mt. Vernon. Del Ray and St. Elmo were platted in 1894, incorporated as the town of Potomac in 1908 and annexed by Alexandria in 1930. The surviving houses are generally modest, from the 1890s to 1941, and several are mail-order houses.

Before a new lockset goes onto an original door, measure the existing bore, the backset and the latch position, and look for filled holes or an old mortise pocket. A lockset that fits the old openings avoids cutting fresh holes in an original door.

When door work needs review

The Old and Historic District door guidelines, amended September 17, 2025, set Board of Architectural Review (BAR) levels for most cases. Installing door hardware needs no BAR review. Replacing a non-historic door, frame or trim goes to staff review, and a new door visible from the public right-of-way goes to the board. Staff may still send a project to the board.
