Which doors suit one

Most smart deadbolts replace a standard single-cylinder deadbolt. They need a door of ordinary thickness with room on the inside face for the motor housing, so a solid house or townhouse door usually works. Harder cases are narrow door stiles, glass close to the lock, and old doors cut for mortise locks, which may need a mortise-style smart lock or a conversion.

Townhouses matter here. Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 11.6 percent of Virginia homes in single-family attached buildings, nearly double the 6.3 percent nationally, and in Alexandria the share is 22.4 percent. An owner in an HOA should check its rules on exterior hardware first. Historic district rules

In the Old and Historic District, the city's door guidelines (amended September 17, 2025) list door hardware, doorbells and doorbell cameras among work needing no review by the Board of Architectural Review. Whether a particular smart lock counts as door hardware is a question for city staff, so ask before buying if the building is in the district. Winter batteries and a backup key

NOAA describes Virginia winters as moderately cold. Batteries are the part of a smart lock most likely to show it: alkaline cells lose capacity in the cold, so a lock that reported plenty of charge in autumn may warn during a January cold snap. Change the batteries at the first low-battery warning.

Keep a working mechanical key, stored somewhere other than inside the house, so a dead battery or a failed update does not lock you out.
