Summers in Virginia are very warm and winters moderately cold, NOAA's state summary says, and both ends wear on a fob. The coin cell inside loses voltage in the cold, so a fob that works at the kitchen table may not reach the car on a frosty morning. A fob left on a dashboard in summer sun bakes its battery, and damp air can corrode the contacts over time.

Before assuming the fob needs programming, fit a fresh battery of the type stamped on the old one and check that the contacts are clean. If the buttons still do nothing, or the car will not recognize the fob to start, programming or a replacement fob is the next step.

Car fobs and building fobs

More than one in three Alexandria homes (36.3 percent, by 2024 Census Bureau estimates) sits in a building of 50 or more units, and a resident of one may carry two fobs on one ring: one for the car and one for the building. Management may run the lobby and garage fobs, and those are issued by management, not programmed to your car. A garage door opener built into the car's mirror or visor is paired separately from the key fob.

Fob programming is done at the vehicle. If the car is in a building garage, arrange access with management and say which level and space. On the street, name the block and the closest intersection.

What to bring or list

• Every working fob and key for the car. On some cars, programming a new fob clears any fob that is not present, so a spare left in a drawer can stop working.
• What fails: lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, or push-button start recognition.
• Whether a fresh battery has already been tried.
• The VIN, from the registration or the label in the driver's door jamb, with photo ID and the registration or title.
• The year, make and model of the car.
