Cold weather and fobs

A fob that stops working in a Spokane winter often needs a battery, not programming. On the east side, where NOAA reports a wider annual temperature range than the west, coin cells lose voltage as they chill, so a fob that works from the kitchen window can fail in a parking lot at dawn.

Before you ask for programming:

• Replace the coin cell.
• Let the fob warm up in an inside pocket and try again.
• Try the spare. If the spare works, the fault is in the first fob, not the car.

Snow is the other hazard: a fob dropped in slush or carried in a wet glove can take on moisture that corrodes its contacts. Programming is for adding a spare or replacing a lost or failed fob.

Programming is done with the car and its fobs together, often with the ignition on and the doors opened and closed. On a residential street, the city's odd-side request applies from November 15 to March 15, so brush the snow off the driver's door, confirm the car starts and choose a spot where it is safe to sit with a door open.

What to have ready

• Every working fob and key for the car. Some cars erase any fob that is not present during programming, so a spare left at home can stop working.
• The VIN, from the base of the windshield on the driver's side
• Photo ID and the registration
• Make, model and year, and whether the car is push-to-start
• Whether a fob was lost or stolen, so it can be removed from the car's memory
