Homes and locks in Vancouver

The city's neighborhood profiles describe three broad kinds of housing.

Pre-war neighborhoods. Hough, just northwest of downtown, is one of the oldest, with Victorian houses, bungalows and foursquares. Arnada has vintage homes near downtown and uptown, and Carter Park has craftsman bungalows from the early to mid-1900s. Doors this old may carry several generations of hardware, so say whether the lock looks original or is a later deadbolt.

Shipyard-era housing. Fruit Valley, the westernmost and largest neighborhood by land area, still has World War II housing built for shipyard workers, and many Harney Heights homes were built for Kaiser shipyard workers. Fourth Plain Village's houses date largely from the 1930s and 1940s, with many duplexes and triplexes among them. Decades of occupants can leave keys you never knew about, so count every exterior door before a lock rekeying.

Multifamily and mid-century. Bagley Downs is densely populated, with multifamily housing beside single-family homes. Hudson's Bay mixes older frame houses and bungalows with apartment buildings, condominiums and the restored Officers Row residences. Evergreen Highlands, on a bluff above the Columbia River, has ranch homes from the 1950s through the 1970s. In a shared building, say whether the problem is your unit lock or the building entry.

Businesses and buildings

The city calls Esther Short Vancouver's commercial, cultural, financial and municipal center; its park, dedicated in 1855, is the oldest public square in the Pacific Northwest. A downtown commercial locksmith request should name the building, the door type and any suite number.

Fourth Plain Boulevard, roughly between I-5 and 65th Avenue, is what the city calls its "international business district," a small-business corridor that in January 2017 became home to The Vine, the region's first bus rapid transit line. Fruit Valley is home to the Port of Vancouver; at an industrial site, say whether the lock is on a building door, a yard gate or a container.

Car trouble in Vancouver

• The city's parking FAQ says each block has a posted time limit, paying again on the same block does not extend it, and vehicles left on the street more than 24 hours may be cited or towed.
• For a car towed from a city street or lot, the FAQ says to call 311.
• In snow and ice, crews focus on major routes and overpasses; the city says neighborhood residential streets are not deiced or plowed. If locked out on an icy side street, mention it when requesting a car lockout.

Local rules worth knowing

Rental Housing Registration, VMC Chapter 5.08. Adopted July 14, 2025, it requires rental housing in Vancouver to be registered with the city each year starting January 1, 2026 (VMC 5.08.060). Exemptions include owner-occupied single-family homes without an accessory dwelling unit (VMC 5.08.050(A)). Useful when a rental's lock fails:

• The application must name the person tenants contact for repair requests (VMC 5.08.060(G)(4)).
• The current registration must be given to tenants or posted where they can see it (VMC 5.08.060(K)).
• New tenants must receive written information on registration and tenant rights (VMC 5.08.070).
