Locked out of a Green Bay home

Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 43.4 percent of Green Bay homes in buildings from 1950 through 1979. A house from those decades often has more than one way in: a front door, a side or back door, a basement entry and an attached garage. Try each one, and ask a household member or neighbor about a spare. Note whether the door has its deadbolt thrown or only a locked knob.

How the building type changes things

A house you own. You decide which door gets opened, and you should be ready to show that you live there.
A rented home. Roughly three in eight occupied Green Bay homes are rented, so a landlord or property manager may hold a key. With a shared street door, say whether you are shut out of the building, your unit or both.
A short-term rental. Green Bay's rule, Section 44-1580(j) of the municipal code, makes the owner of a unit hosting paying guests for fewer than 28 consecutive days hold a Short-Term Rental Permit and name a local representative for problems during a stay. A locked-out guest should reach that representative or the host first, since the host controls the locks and any door codes.

The state Department of Transportation counts roughly 35-40 winter weather events in a typical Wisconsin winter. A lockout during one is a safety problem before it is a lock problem, so wait indoors at a neighbor's or in a car, not on the step. Call 911 if a child or anyone unable to open the door is alone inside, or if you smell gas or see smoke.

What to have ready

Photo ID showing the address, or a lease, deed or utility bill in your name there
The door to open, and whether it has a deadbolt, a knob lock or both
Your neighborhood association, such as Navarino or Shipyard, or the nearest cross streets
For a rental, the landlord's or host's name and number
