The Astor Historic District covers about 39 square blocks in southeast Green Bay, bounded by East Mason Street, Webster Avenue, Grignon Street and the Fox River, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It lies within the plat of Astor, surveyed in 1835 and named for John Jacob Astor. Its houses range from Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Shingle styles of the later 19th century to châteauesque and Prairie School homes of the early 20th century.

If a front door in Astor still has its original hardware, lock repair or rekeying is worth trying before cutting a period door to fit a modern lockset.

Businesses and buildings

The Broadway-Dousman Historic District extends about half a block each way from the corner of North Broadway and Dousman Street, in what its 1998 National Register form calls the historic Fort Howard/West Green Bay commercial district. Two- and three-story commercial blocks with two or more storefronts dominate its 15 buildings. The oldest, the 1873 Albert Flatten Wholesale Produce building at 406-408 Dousman, was then described as the city's only extant Gothic Revival commercial building.

The form notes that most contributing buildings had renovated storefronts, and that at the 1925 Fort Howard Hotel, 231-233 North Broadway, the central door to the upper-floor rooms had been replaced with a steel security door. When one building holds several storefronts and an upstairs entry, say which storefront and which door needs work in a commercial locksmith request.

Car trouble in Green Bay

Under Section 40-29(I) of the municipal code, no vehicle may be parked on any city street between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. The Parking Division can approve exceptions, such as for a disabled vehicle or houseguests, when asked before 2:00 a.m. Exceptions apply only to residential properties of three or fewer units, are limited to six per calendar year and are valid only in front of the requesting address. None are granted during a declared snow emergency.

On Packer home game days, the city allows parking on grass citywide until midnight, and vehicles must be off streets signed "No Parking Day of Packer Game" at least four hours before kickoff. Local rules worth knowing

Green Bay requires a Short-Term Rental Permit under Section 44-1580(j) for a dwelling unit where paying guests stay fewer than 28 consecutive days. It does not apply when the home is your primary residence and you share it with the renter. The permit is needed before the unit is occupied or advertised, the owner must name a local representative within 30 minutes of the rental to respond to immediate issues, and a Brown County health inspection is required yearly.
