Cold, salt and a fob that stops responding

Try a new coin-cell battery before deciding a fob has failed. If a fob's range shrinks in a January cold snap, a weak battery is the first thing to rule out, and reprogramming will not revive a battery that is nearly dead.

Road salt is the other Wisconsin factor. The state Department of Transportation reports using an average of 452,000 tons of salt per season across Wisconsin, and the slush it leaves dries around fob buttons and in door keyholes. A sticky or unresponsive button may need wiping rather than replacing.

Street and garage parking

Where the car is parked changes what a request needs to say. If water gets into a garage after a heavy rain, check the locks there for rust, and give the car's door locks the same look. When you send a request, say where the car is: at a curb, in a driveway or in a garage.
