Try the battery first

Many fobs that seem to need programming only need a new coin-cell battery. Heat shortens battery life, and a fob left on a dashboard or in a parked car runs hot. A weak battery shows as less range, pressing twice or a dashboard warning. Fit a fresh battery of the type in your owner's manual first. If the car still does not recognize the fob, or the fob is new or lost, it needs programming to the car.

Car fobs and garage remotes are separate

A car fob is paired to the car. A garage remote, or the garage buttons built into a car's mirror or visor, is paired to the opener. Since July 1, 2019, California Health and Safety Code § 19892 has barred selling or installing a residential automatic garage door opener without a battery backup designed to work during a power outage. If you replaced an opener recently, the car's built-in garage buttons may need pairing with the new opener, which is a separate job from programming a car fob.

Getting to the car

The car has to be on hand for programming, so describe where it is parked. In the Van Nuys overlay zone, lots were cut deep in the 1920s for poultry farming, with chicken houses at the rear, and a car kept toward the back of a deep lot can sit well away from the house. Say whether there is room to open the driver's door and whether the car is in a garage, on a driveway or at the curb. At the curb, note any posted sweeping time, and remember that California Vehicle Code 22651(k) lets the city cite or tow a car left in one place over 72 consecutive hours.
