Try the battery first

A weak coin-cell battery can make a working fob look dead, so try a fresh cell of the type printed on the old one before asking for programming. If the buttons are cracked or the fob has been through the wash, it may need a new shell or circuit board rather than programming.

The car and every fob have to be in one place for programming, so say whether the car is in a garage, on the driveway or on the street, and whether the garage door will open.
