Replacing hardware in an Athens home

Statewide, Georgia homes skew young: Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 38.3 percent of them in buildings from 2000 or later. Athens-Clarke County's local historic districts are a different case. They include Cobbham, Dearing, Boulevard, Milledge, Milledge Circle, Buena Vista, Bloomfield, Reese, Woodlawn and West Cloverhurst-Springdale, and Milledge Avenue itself dates to the late 1850s.

What the county's historic rules say about locks

Chapter 8-5 of the Athens-Clarke County Code covers historic preservation, and many exterior changes in a local district need a Certificate of Appropriateness, sometimes even when no building permit is required. For hardware itself, the Milledge Avenue guidelines are direct: section 2c.3 treats repairing existing doors and replacing door hardware and locks as maintenance needing no review.

Adding to the door is another matter. Under section 2c.2, a new screen, storm or security door goes to staff review at a secondary entrance but needs a Historic Preservation Commission hearing at the front entrance, and street-facing security bars need a hearing under section 2b.4. Fitting a new lock to an old door

The door decides what will fit. A door as old as some in these districts may hold a mortise lock, whose body sits in a pocket cut into the door edge, so a standard deadbolt may not simply drop in. Photograph the existing lock before any parts are ordered. If the original still works, lock repair may keep it in service.
