Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 38.3 percent of Georgia's homes in buildings from 2000 or later and only 3.9 percent before 1940. Several Atlanta neighborhoods run the other way.

• Inman Park was planned in the late 1880s as the city's first streetcar suburb and filled in over decades, so its housing runs from mill-town shotguns to Victorians from the original plan and bungalows from the early 1900s. Doors from those eras may carry mortise locks, whose body sits in a pocket cut into the door edge. A modern deadbolt will not simply drop into that pocket, so the choice is usually a new mortise lock, a repair of the old one or altering the door.
• Collier Heights grew from 1948 to about 1,750 homes, mostly brick ranches from the 1950s and 1960s. Hardware original to a house that age has been in service for more than half a century. A lock that is loose, hard to key or no longer latching cleanly is a fair candidate for new hardware.
• Castleberry Hill housing is mostly lofts, and the district's cotton-warehouse roots go back to the 19th century. A unit door that opens onto a shared corridor may fall under building rules, so check with management before changing it.

Historic district review

Inman Park (2002), Collier Heights (2013) and Castleberry Hill (a Landmark District since 2006) are designated by the City of Atlanta through its Urban Design Commission. Before replacing an original exterior door or its visible hardware in one of them, ask the commission's staff whether review applies. For a lock replacement request, photograph both sides of the door and the lock's edge plate, and give the door thickness and the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob or deadbolt. Say whether the lock is a mortise type, whether the house is in a designated district and whether the new lock should match the key for your other doors.
