Summerville, which locals call "the Hill," sits northwest of downtown. It began in the 1780s as a village separate from Augusta, became a resort with many hotels and was annexed by the city in 1912. Its 730-acre National Register district is roughly bounded by Milledge Lane, Wrightsboro Road and Highland and Heard Avenues.

Car trouble in Augusta

A car locked or a key lost on Fort Gordon adds a gate to the problem. Visitors without DoD credentials get a pass at the Visitor Control Center by Gate 6, off Gordon Highway, open Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed weekends and holidays. Anyone 18 or older needs a Real ID or two alternate documents, a favorable NCIC background check and a visitor's pass. Commercial vehicles use the truck side of Gate 6 for extra screening. Local rules worth knowing

Augusta's Historic Preservation Ordinance (Augusta-Richmond County Code, Chapter 7-4) bars any material change in the exterior appearance of a property in a designated historic district until the Historic Preservation Commission approves a Certificate of Appropriateness (§ 7-4-16). It counts the type and style of doors and windows as exterior architectural features (§ 7-4-2). The commission does not consider interior changes that have no effect on those features (§ 7-4-23). If it does not act on an application within 45 days, the application counts as approved (§ 7-4-25).

Ordinary maintenance or repair that does not change design, materials or outer appearance needs no Certificate, but the owner must first confirm with the commission's designated staff person that the work qualifies (§ 7-4-51).

Evictions in Augusta are handled by the Marshal's Office. Once it receives a writ of possession, it contacts the landlord to schedule the eviction and leaves a courtesy notice at the residence no later than 24 hours before; the landlord pays all labor and expenses.
