Try the battery first

Many fobs run on small coin-cell batteries, which lose strength in the cold, and heat can shorten their life, so a fob that fails on a bitter morning or after a hot summer day may only need a fresh one. Winters here bring occasional heavy lake-effect snow, NOAA notes, and a fob that spends the day in a coat pocket meets cold, slush and moisture along the way.

Swap the battery before assuming anything else. Some fobs keep their programming through a battery change and others need to be re-synced, so check the owner's manual. If the fob was soaked or dropped, has a cracked case, or still has a dead button with a fresh battery, the problem is the fob itself, not its programming.
