Homes and locks in Springfield

Central Springfield is largely a grid, with downtown's numbered streets running from 1st Street at the State Capitol east to 32nd Street.

• Enos Park, between Carpenter Street and North Grand from Third to Ninth streets, peaked in the late 1910s and 1920s with frame houses and row houses such as the Enos Flats on North Fifth Street. From the 1930s through the 1950s, many large single-family homes were converted into multiple-family dwellings.
• Aristocracy Hill, just south of downtown between Second and Ninth streets, has been studied for its house styles and the growth of apartment living in Springfield.

Car trouble in Springfield

Under Section 79.30 of the Springfield Code of Ordinances, city officials may declare a snow emergency of 72 hours or less, which can be extended. Parking is then prohibited on designated snow emergency routes, which include stretches of 5th, 6th, 9th and 11th streets and North Grand and must carry "SNOW EMERGENCY" signs no more than 500 feet apart. A vehicle left on a route may be impounded and cited, and its owner is responsible for towing, storage and administrative fees unless the spot was not properly marked, whether or not the owner received actual notice.
