The Naperville Historic District, designated in 1986, covers about 30 blocks between North Avenue and Chicago, Jefferson and Franklin avenues, from Columbia Street west to Loomis, Ellsworth and Center streets, including North Central College's historic campus. The city's 2026 survey update counted 327 properties, led by Queen Anne houses and American Foursquares, with many gable-front, Italianate and bungalow homes on streets such as Brainard, Sleight and Wright.

Doors there fall under the Historic Preservation Ordinance (Title 6, Chapter 11 of the Municipal Code). Storm doors and work on secondary or rear elevations generally need no Certificate of Appropriateness. In-kind replacement of a primary-façade door can be approved administratively by the Zoning Administrator, while major primary-façade work goes to the Historic Preservation Commission. The survey found replacement front doors among work done without a required certificate. A lock rekey leaves the door itself unchanged.

At the district's northeast end, construction of Heritage Place townhouses began in December 2021 on North Central College's former Kroehler Memorial Campus, where the 1908 Kroehler Mansion was kept.

The East Highlands, which Harold Moser began developing in 1954, was Naperville's first large commercial subdivision. Naperville Preservation Inc counts 223 original structures among the 453 sites it surveyed, so midcentury originals and newer houses share the same winding streets.

Naperville police say patrol officers find hundreds of open garage doors each month during evening hours. The department recommends solid-core or metal exterior doors, deadbolts with a 1-inch throw, and reinforced strike plates held by 2- to 3-inch screws.

Businesses and buildings

In 2024 the Beidelman Buildings at Washington Street and Jackson Avenue became Naperville's first landmarked commercial structures: a 1928 three-story Gothic Revival block and a mid-19th-century two-story "workshop" later faced with brick. The 1898 Old Nichols Library, landmarked in 2017, now fronts a mixed-use development built to its rear and south.

Car trouble in Naperville

Municipal Code section 11-2A-8 bars parking on city streets between 2 and 5 a.m. Exceptions cover emergencies, the Overnight Parking Program for approved multi-family neighborhoods whose vehicles display an HOA-issued hangtag, and temporary permission from the police department, limited to three requests per vehicle per month and granted at its discretion.

Downtown has four city parking facilities: Van Buren, Central, Municipal Center and Water Street. Overnight parking is allowed Friday and Saturday nights on set levels of the first three, but not Sunday night. On-street spaces have a two-hour limit from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and Washington Street has weekday tow zones from 6 to 8:30 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. For a car lockout downtown, note the facility and level.
