Replacing a lost car key

Most modern car keys carry a transponder chip, and many are remote or push-button keys, so a replacement is cut or built to match the car and then programmed to it. Because the new key will start the car, car key replacement begins with proof that the car is yours.

Proof of ownership

Have these ready before work starts:

• Photo ID.
• The registration or title in your name. If those papers were lost with the keys, your state motor-vehicle agency can issue replacements.
• The VIN, printed on the registration and visible through the windshield at the driver's-side corner of the dashboard.
• For a leased or company car, the lease or a letter from the business that owns it.

If the car is registered to a family member, that person should be part of the request.

Where the car is parked

• City garages. Frederick's five garages allow overnight parking, but the city asks drivers to contact its Parking Department before leaving a car more than 48 hours. If a lost key means the car will sit longer, make that call and note the garage name and level in your request.
• At home. The 2020 Comprehensive Plan draft names Crum Farm among the Northwest Area's suburban neighborhoods and Dearbought in the Northeast Area. For a car at home in either, give the street, say whether it is in a driveway, a closed garage or on the street, and whether the driver's door can open fully.
• Commercial lots. The plan calls the aging US 40/West Patrick Street corridor the Golden Mile. For a car in a lot there, give the row or nearest store and whether the lot closes at night.

Other details to include

Send the make, model and year, the key type (plain transponder, remote head or push-button fob), and whether any working key remains.
