The Rockville 2040 Comprehensive Plan divides the city into 17 planning areas, from Rockville Town Center and East Rockville to Rockshire, Fallsgrove and King Farm.

• West End: Large Victorians went up along West Montgomery Avenue and South Washington Street in the late 1800s. Bungalows, Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod homes followed through the mid-1900s, and later split-levels. The area includes the West Montgomery Avenue Historic District.
• Lincoln Park: One of Montgomery County's oldest African-American communities, dating to the 1850s. It is mostly detached homes, plus Rocklin Apartments and Legacy at Lincoln Park, a mainly townhouse development completed in 2007.
• Twinbrook: Much of it was annexed around 1949 and first developed between the 1940s and 1960s, mostly as detached houses. Townhouse communities such as Ashleigh Woods and Rockcrest Courts came later.
• King Farm: A former 440-acre farm annexed in 1995. Construction began in 2000 on a neo-traditional grid of detached homes, townhouses and apartments.

In an older West End house, a worn original lock can often be repaired or rekeyed, leaving the door itself as it is. Businesses and buildings

For decades after the Twinbrook Metro station opened in 1984, Rockville Pike was mainly an auto-oriented regional commercial destination. After much of it was rezoned for mixed use in 2009, new projects have been mostly apartments and stand-alone shops and restaurants.

Along Gude Drive, the Southlawn light industrial area holds auto repair, wholesale supply and warehousing, and the RedGate Industrial Park across East Gude Drive has offices and research labs. When asking for work there, say whether it is the front office door, a service door or a loading entrance. Car trouble in Rockville

The city has nearly 500 metered spaces in five areas: City Hall, Jefferson Plaza, Stonestreet, Town Center and Twinbrook. It does not operate any parking garages, so in a garage, note its name and level and ask its operator about access.

The Rockville City Police Department's Parking Enforcement Unit offers a lockout service on weekdays within city limits. Local rules worth knowing

• Chapter 18 of the Rockville City Code, Rental Facilities and Landlord-Tenant Relations, governs rentals in the city. The city requires a Rental Property License for single-family rentals, including detached houses, townhomes and condominiums.
• On July 6, 2026, the Mayor and Council adopted a revised Chapter 18 that takes effect January 1, 2027. It creates a repair-and-deduct option for tenants.
• On a locally designated historic property, exterior alterations such as changes to windows and doors need city approval. Storm windows and storm doors can get staff approval; most other work needs a Certificate of Approval from the Historic District Commission.
