Why fobs act up

A key fob is a small radio transmitter powered by a coin cell, and many also carry a transponder chip that lets the engine start. Key fob programming pairs a new or replacement fob with the car, or re-pairs one that lost sync after a battery change or repair.

Weather is hard on both parts. NOAA's summary for Maryland describes warm, humid summers and freezing winter nights. Cold lowers a coin cell's output, so a weak battery often shows first on a cold morning as short range or a fob that needs several presses. Heat inside a parked car ages batteries, and humidity can reach the circuit board through a cracked case. Before booking programming, try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one, since a weak battery is a common cause.

Garage, street and driveway

Describe where the fob fails, because the setting points to the cause.

• City garages. Frederick has five, and the city permits overnight parking in them. Name the garage and level where the fob fails. If it works at arm's length but not across the level, the battery or transmitter is usually weak.
• Street parking. If the fob fails in one spot but works elsewhere, note the location. If it fails everywhere, the fob or its pairing is the more likely cause.

• Push-button start. If the dashboard shows "key not detected," say so, and whether holding the fob against the start button changes anything.

What to have ready
