Which Newark door has you locked out

A Newark lockout depends on how many doors stand between the sidewalk and your own rooms.

• Ironbound two- and three-family houses. About 60 percent of the Ironbound's real estate market is these houses, and a shared front door and hallway can mean two locked doors, not one. Say whether you are stuck at the street door your neighbors also use or at your own door inside the hall.
• Detached houses in Weequahic. Single-family homes there are laid out around Weequahic Park. Such a house may have side or rear doors as well as the front, so list every entry and which are locked.
• Towers on Elizabeth Avenue. In a high-rise such as 440 Elizabeth Avenue (25 stories), the lobby comes before your apartment door. Section 18:3-1.58 of Newark's Housing Code requires dwellings with more than 10 units to have a doorbell, intercom or similar device at the front exterior that lets a visitor signal each unit, so someone at home may be able to let you into the lobby.

Papers that show you live there

Have proof of residence ready: photo ID showing the address, or a lease or deed in your name if your ID carries an older address. If those papers are inside, say so at the start of your request.

What to put in the request
