What makes a Newark lock problem urgent

An urgent lock problem is one where someone's safety or a building's security is at stake right now.

  • Winter nights. In a New Jersey winter, being shut out overnight is urgent, especially for an older person or a child. If anyone inside cannot open the door for themselves, call 911.
  • Coastal storms. NOAA's summary says the state sees at least one coastal storm a year, and in some years five to ten. A door or frame knocked out of line by wind or a fallen limb, and no longer able to lock, leaves the house open until it is secured.

After a break-in

Call the police first, and let them see the door before anything is fixed, since the lock, strike and frame are part of what they look at. Then photograph the damage for your records and for your landlord.

A forced door often needs the strike and frame reinforced, not only a new lock. In the Ironbound, where two- and three-family houses account for most of the real estate market, a forced front door is often a shared one, so tell every household and the owner at once.

Lock changes for survivors

Under N.J.S.A. 46:8-9.14 (P.L.2023, c.174), a court issuing a temporary or permanent domestic violence restraining order may order the landlord to change the locks where the victim lives. If the landlord has not installed new locks within 48 hours of receiving the victim's written request, the victim may change them, then must notify the landlord and provide a copy of the new keys within 48 hours. The victim pays for a change made this way but may seek reimbursement under N.J.S.A. 2C:25-29. This is general information, not legal advice.

What to send first

  1. Your location and the door involved: house, shared street door, apartment, storefront or car.
  2. What happened: lockout, break-in, storm damage or a lock that will not lock.
  3. Whether anyone is at risk, and whether police or 911 have been called.
  4. Photos of the lock and door, if it is safe to take them.
