Does your door suit a smart lock

Most smart deadbolts are made for a bored door, with a round hole through the face and a bolt in the edge. The 19th-century row houses of Paulus Hook, Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove and Van Vorst Park can have doors from before bored locks became common, and those may carry a mortise lock instead. A mortise door needs a smart lock built for mortise cases, or a retrofit that keeps the existing lock and motorizes the inside thumb turn.

In those four districts the front door is also a historic feature. The Historic Preservation Commission's guidelines allow hardware that matches the original under a Certificate of No Effect, while a non-matching door needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Apartments need approval first

Exchange Place has a high concentration of high-rise residential and office buildings, and a tower's rules may govern what goes on a unit door. Ask management before buying anything. In any building of three or more units, the state's multiple dwelling rules, N.J.A.C. 5:10-19.2, set the locks each unit door must have, and the landlord supplies them, so get written approval before swapping one.

Cold, humidity and batteries

NOAA describes moderately cold New Jersey winters and warm, humid summers. Alkaline batteries lose capacity in the cold, so a keypad on an outside door may warn of low power sooner in January; replace the batteries at the first warning rather than waiting. Humid air and wind-driven rain are hard on exposed electronics, so choose a model made for outdoor use.

Keep a backup key

Choose a lock with a mechanical key override, and keep that key somewhere other than the house. In your request, give the door type (bored or mortise), photos of both sides, whether a building or the commission must approve, and how you plan to connect the lock.
