Draft amendments to the city's master plan from 2006 single out parking as a problem in neighborhoods of one- and two-family houses, where older homes often lack off-street parking. That puts many cars at the curb, and posted rules keep applying while you wait.

• Permit zones. In many areas, signs require a resident parking permit to park longer than 2 hours. If you are visiting and locked out in one of those zones, note when you parked; the clock does not pause while you wait.
• Snow emergencies. The city's Office of Emergency Management points to City Ordinance §332-34 for designated snow emergency routes, which drivers are told to clear. NOAA describes New Jersey summers as warm and humid, and a closed car in the sun heats up far beyond the air outside.
