Which door you are locked out of

In Reading, a house lockout is usually a rowhouse lockout. The city's 2024–2028 Consolidated Plan counts 54% of housing units as single-family attached homes and 19% as buildings of two to four units; only 10% are detached. That mix shapes what being locked out means:

• A whole rowhouse. One household, one front door. Before sending a request, check a rear or basement door you rarely use; it may be unlocked.
• An apartment in a divided house. There may be two locks between you and home: the shared street door and your own unit door. If a neighbor or the owner can let you through the street door, only your lock needs attention.
• An entry with a vestibule. If an outer door and an inner door both lock, say which of the two is the problem.
• A larger older house. In Centre Park, industrialists built along Centre Avenue from the 1870s, while workers, tradesmen and clerks lived in more modest homes on Rose Street and Madison Avenue. A bigger house may have several exterior doors, so list them.

Expect to show that you belong inside before the door is opened. Photo ID with the address is simplest. If your ID carries an old address, a lease or deed in your name does the same job. When those papers are locked inside, say so up front; they can be checked once the door is open.
