In Center City, the Old Allentown Historic District mixes Federal, Italianate, Eastlake and Victorian houses, and Victorian architecture is most common in Old Fairgrounds and Jordan Heights. Where an original door here still has its old lockset, rekeying or repairing it leaves the street-facing look unchanged, which matters under the historic rules below.

In the West End, the city describes West Park Historic District homes as Colonial Revival and Queen Anne. Nearby West Walnut and Union Terrace combine row homes, small apartment complexes, bungalows and Victorian-style houses, so a lockout there can involve a shared entrance, a unit door, or both.

Hamilton Street buildings

Hamilton Street, the major thoroughfare through Center City, was developed as Allentown's central shopping district. Its older buildings include the 13-story Americus Hotel (1926–27) and the Zollinger-Harned Company Building (1925–26), and the 24-story PPL Building is the tallest in Allentown and the Lehigh Valley.

Car trouble in Allentown

Under Article 527.02 of the city's traffic regulations, a snow emergency takes effect four hours after it is declared and can only be declared between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. About 30 streets are designated snow emergency routes. Vehicles on them must be moved to other streets, and police tow cars as necessary. If your car is locked or its key is lost on one of these routes after a declaration, say so when you ask for help.

During the February 2026 snow emergency, the Allentown Parking Authority opened its parking decks, except Strata, to the public, so give the deck name and level if your car is in one.

The city's snow FAQ explains that on two-way streets with parking on one side, plows push snow away from oncoming traffic, which can plow in parked cars. Article 527.06 prohibits shoveling snow from vehicles or driveways into the street.

Local rules worth knowing

Historic districts. Old Allentown (1978) and Old Fairgrounds (1981) were established under City Ordinance 12314, and West Park (2000) under Ordinance 13881. Exterior alterations there require a Certificate of Appropriateness. Minor changes may need only staff review; substantial alterations visible from the street go to the Historical Architectural Review Board, which recommends approval or denial to City Council. Rekeying changes nothing outside, but replacing a front door or its visible hardware may count as an exterior alteration, so contact the city's Historic Office first.

Rental registration. Allentown rental units must be registered and inspected, with the rental license renewed every year, and owners must display the city's Owner and Occupant Duties document in every unit.
