Checking an older door first

Only about one in ten of Reading's 33,909 housing units is a detached house, according to the city's 2024–2028 Consolidated Plan; most homes are attached rowhouses or sit in buildings of two to four units. Many smart deadbolts are built around a standard bored lock: a motor unit replaces the inside thumb turn and a keypad replaces the outside half. Before choosing a model for an older Reading door, check:

• The door's thickness and the distance from its edge to the lock hole. Most models list the range they fit.
• Whether the door is solid enough to carry a heavy inside unit. A thin, split or warped panel may not be.
• Whether the bolt already rubs the strike. A motor pushing a binding bolt strains and drains batteries, so fix the fit first.

Street doors in divided houses

In a house split into apartments, the street door belongs to the building, so the owner is the one to approve a keypad there. The appeal for an owner is code control: each tenant gets a code, and a departing tenant's code is deleted instead of every household getting a new key. Owners who live away

Some Reading owners must name a responsible local agent under Ordinance § 308-110, as cited on the city's Responsible Local Agent Form, because they live 25 miles outside the city. If your building has such an agent in Berks County, a keypad lets the agent hold a personal code that is removed when the agent changes, instead of one more physical key to track.
