Locked out at a meter

According to the city's parking meter page, Myrtle Beach charges for metered parking from 9 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, from March 1 through September 30. Meters cover beach accesses and street ends citywide, plus streets between Ocean Boulevard and Kings Highway from 29th Avenue South to 67th Avenue North. If your keys are locked inside a car in one of those spaces, the meter keeps running while you wait.

Keeping the meter paid

Meters and pay stations take coins and cards. Drivers can also use the Park-Mobile app or Text-2-Park, which means texting the zone number to 25023. Unpaid time draws a citation, and the fine rises if it stays unpaid for 30 days. Note the zone number on the meter or pay station before you walk away, so you can pay or text from wherever you end up waiting. This is general information, not legal advice.

Heat, children and pets

If a child or pet is inside the locked car, do not wait for a locksmith: call 911. A closed car heats up in direct sun even on a mild day, and a person or animal inside can be in danger.

Describing where the car is

  • The avenue number and whether it is North or South, or the name of the beach access
  • Whether you are east or west of Kings Highway
  • The zone number from the meter or pay station, if you can see it
  • The car's make, model and color, and where the keys are: seat, ignition or trunk
  • Whether the car has a key fob or push-button start
