Locked out at the curb

On-street parking in Greenville allows two hours per day. The city lists overstaying that limit as a common violation, and moving a vehicle to avoid a citation is on the same list. A car you can't get into is still on that clock, so note when you parked and put it in your request, along with the block and the side of the street.

Residents of Bennett Street and the Pettigru Historic District can hold permits that let them stay past those limits. Permit parking districts fall under Sec. 42-149 and following of the City Code, and the city says a permit is not a way to store a vehicle on the street. Locked out in a city garage

Greenville's downtown garages have plate readers and surveillance cameras. If your car is locked inside one, give the garage name, the level and the nearest stair or elevator. If the parking ticket or your payment card is in the locked car, don't try to lift or force the gate: in September 2025 the city said it would pursue criminal charges against drivers who intentionally break or lift gates to avoid paying. Use the call-for-assistance button at the gate instead, which puts you in touch with a live person.

Heat inside a closed car

A shut car in sunlight can turn dangerously hot, even on a mild day, and a cold car is no safer for someone who cannot get out. If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is inside, call 911 now instead of waiting for a locksmith. Keys locked in with the engine running are worth mentioning too, since the engine keeps burning fuel.

• where the keys are, if you can see them
• whether anyone is inside, once 911 has been called
