Fob, battery or programming

A fob that stops working has not always lost its programming. Often the coin cell inside is simply weak. NOAA describes Virginia's summers as very warm and humid and its winters as moderately cold, and both ends are hard on a small battery: heat on a sunny dashboard shortens its life, and a cold morning cuts the power a tired cell can deliver. Damp air can also corrode the contacts.

Try this first:

1. Replace the battery with the same size coin cell, facing the right way up.
2. Check that the contacts are clean and dry and the case closes fully.
3. Test the fob next to the car, then from a few steps away.

If the doors respond but the car will not start, or a new or replacement fob will not pair, the fob may need programming to the car.

Garage, street or driveway

Some cars can be programmed where they stand; others need a connection to the car's diagnostic port with the ignition on. The city's Oceanfront garages sit on Pacific Avenue at 9th, 25th and 31st Streets, and a car on an upper level there can be hard to find without directions. Give the garage, the level and the nearest landmark, and keep your parking paid while the work is done.

At home, note whether the car sits in a garage, on a driveway or at the curb, and whether it can be moved if the battery is low.

Gather before programming

• Every fob and key you have for the car, working or not
• The VIN, from the registration or the dashboard
• Photo ID and the registration or title in your name
• The replacement fob, if you bought one, with its part number; a fob bought elsewhere may not match the car
• Make, model and year, and whether it has push-button start
