Fitting a new lock to an older or newer door

A replacement lock has to suit the holes already cut in the door, and that changes from one Seattle building to the next.

• Wallingford houses. The streetcar suburb's 1920s bungalows and box houses may still have doors from the same era. One that old may carry a lock set into a pocket in the door edge instead of a round bored lockset, so the replacement is chosen to fit that pocket, or the door is repaired first.
• Newer buildings. A quarter of Seattle's homes, 25.6 percent in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, date from 2010 or later. Doors in newer buildings more often take standard deadbolts and levers. In a large building, shared entries stay with management, so a replacement request covers the unit door only.

Replacing a lock on a Seattle rental door

Seattle Municipal Code Chapter 22.214 applies the RRIO Checklist to rentals, and a new entry lock has to sit within its standards:

• Every entrance door to a unit or house, sliding doors included, must resist forcible entry, so the door and frame deserve a look along with the lock.
• The main entrance door needs a peephole 54 to 66 inches above the floor, a window in the door, or a side light within 31 inches. A replacement door should keep one of the three.
• Where the checklist differs from what a valid building permit allowed, the permit standard applies, but deadbolts and deadlatches on entry doors must meet current code regardless.

Replace, rekey or repair

Replacement is for a lock that has worn out, been damaged or never suited the door. If the lock works and only the keys are the concern, lock rekeying keeps the hardware. If one part sticks, lock repair may be enough.
