Which Vancouver doors suit a smart lock

Many will take one without much fuss. The Census Bureau's 2024 estimates show that only 3.9 percent of the city's homes predate 1940, against 9.3 percent statewide, so many doors here are recent enough to have a standard bored deadbolt hole. That hole is what most smart deadbolts are made to replace.

Older houses need a closer look. Hough's Victorians and foursquares and Carter Park's craftsman bungalows may have mortise locks, thick or out-of-square doors, or a deadbolt added decades after the door was hung. Only some smart locks fit mortise doors. Measure the door's thickness and photograph its edge before buying anything.

Approvals in shared buildings

In a Hudson's Bay condominium, the association may set rules for entry doors and hardware; in an apartment, check whether your lease requires the landlord's permission for a lock change. Get approval in writing first.

Keyless entry in a rental has a state rule attached. RCW 59.18.750, effective January 1, 2027, requires a landlord, if a tenant asks, to offer an alternative key that uses no biometric information or phone app, such as a key fob, key card, physical key or keypad code. Rain, cold and batteries

NOAA's climate summary puts most of Washington's precipitation in winter, and a Vancouver front door takes much of that rain. For a smart lock, a wet winter is the bigger test: choose a model made for exterior use and make sure the outside housing seals against the door. Cold also weakens alkaline batteries, so change them at the first low-battery warning rather than waiting through a cold snap.

Keep a backup key

Choose a lock with a mechanical key cylinder or an emergency battery contact, and keep one physical key somewhere other than the house. Test that it turns the lock before you rely on it. A dead battery with no backup becomes a house lockout.
