Homes and locks in Phoenix

Census Bureau estimates for 2024 count 678,852 housing units in Phoenix. About 231,000 of them, roughly a third, went up in the 1970s or 1980s, and about 92,000 date from before 1960. After a move, lock rekeying retires the old keys and leaves the hardware in place.

The city lists 36 residential historic districts with preservation overlay zoning. Willo, generally bounded by First and Seventh avenues and McDowell Road, has a period of significance of 1910 to 1950. Accounts of early central Phoenix subdivisions describe Craftsman doors with a single window pane in the upper third and, in Spanish-style houses, batten doors that may carry iron strap hinges. Businesses and buildings

The city defines Downtown as the area between 7th Street and 7th Avenue, from McDowell Road to Buckeye Road, and Wikipedia counts more than twenty-five high-rise buildings there. A tower may run its lobby door, elevator and garage on one building-controlled system, while an older building converted to offices can put original doors beside newer suite entrances. The Phoenix Fire Department requires automatic vehicle gates at residential and commercial properties to have a fire department key switch on both sides of the gate, so for an apartment or business gate, say whether it is an automatic vehicle gate.

Car trouble in Phoenix

The city operates approximately 2,000 parking meters in the downtown, uptown, capitol and Phoenix College areas, enforced from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, including weekends and holidays, at $1.50 per hour. Local rules worth knowing

In the historic overlay districts, the city's Historic Preservation Office reviews exterior changes before work, while routine maintenance, and repairs or in-kind replacement that leave materials and design unchanged, need no permission. Neither FAQ answer on this mentions lock hardware, so a question about changing anything visible on a historic door belongs with the office.

Chapter 39 of the city code, the Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance, says windows, doors, locks on doors and hinges must be present, installed properly and kept from deterioration (Section 39-6), and lists exterior doors with inoperable locks among its examples of deterioration.

In Ahwatukee, 5,073 homes form a planned community governed by the Ahwatukee Board of Management, where exterior changes are subject to architectural review. Its architectural guidelines, which apply to lots without a sub-association, require approval before any work begins and say a sub-association's own guidelines take precedence where it has architectural control. They contain no rule on entry locks, keypads or smart locks, so put a hardware question to the association before smart lock installation on a door visible from the street.
