Which lock the key broke in

A snapped key is easier to sort out when you can name the lock, and Tucson has doors of every age. The city-hosted neighborhood guide describes West University as about half Craftsman bungalows and Barrio Santa Rosa as mostly Sonoran adobe, in rowhouses whose fronts sit flush with the street. An entry door in either may be original or a later replacement. Post-war ranch houses, by the same guide, put a carport or garage under the main roof, so the door between that space and the house is one more place a key can give way, alongside the front door.

Stop turning the key the moment it gives. Leave the stub alone rather than working at it with a blade or pliers, which can seat it deeper or mar the cylinder. Hold on to every piece you have.

Repair before replacement in a historic zone

The city's February 2025 draft of the Barrio Historico design guidelines says existing doors should be maintained and repaired as necessary. Getting a stub out of a sound lock leaves the original door in place, which fits that approach. The draft also files window and door repair under Minor HPZ Review, the track for work that needs no building permit. It is still a draft, so ask the city what applies to your address before planning anything beyond the lock.

A rented door
