What counts as urgent in Tucson

Safety comes ahead of any lock. Phone 911 first if a person or pet is trapped inside a locked house or car. What follows applies once nobody is in danger but a door has failed.

• Extreme heat. NWS Tucson's record high is 117°F, set on June 26, 1990, and the Weather Service calls excessive heat by far the number-one weather-related killer in Arizona. Being shut out at midday in summer is urgent in a way an April afternoon is not.
• Monsoon storms. By the Weather Service's dates the monsoon runs June 15 to September 30, and gusts from Arizona thunderstorms almost always exceed 40 mph. A door that will not shut properly matters more once a storm is building.
• Cold nights. Freezing is uncommon, about 12 days a year on the 1991 to 2020 normal, but the record low is 6°F, set on January 7, 1913. A shut-out on one of those nights weighs more than one on a mild evening.
• A door that will not stay locked. After a burglary, a splintered frame or a worn-out lock, the first goal is a door that closes and holds, with the full repair after that.

After a break-in

Call the police first, and 911 if an intruder may still be inside. Do not touch the door, frame or lock until officers have seen them. Photograph the damage for the report and any insurance claim, then move on to making the opening secure.

Phones when the power fails

The Weather Service warns that power and communications outages can be more widespread and last longer than a thunderstorm, and that cordless phones do not work without electricity. A cell phone is the one to rely on, so keep it charged through the summer. Keep the exact address handy for whoever you contact, 911 included.

Safety while you wait

Get into shade, and away from the weather if a storm is close. The Weather Service's monsoon guidance includes plenty of water and shade for pets. Stay out of a house that was forced until police tell you it is clear, and do not go through a window or work at a door yourself.
