Which door you are locked out of

In San Jose the building shapes a lockout as much as the lock does. The Fairglen Additions in Willow Glen hold 218 Eichler houses with post-and-beam framing and floor-to-ceiling glass facing the courtyards, and one common plan puts an atrium between the garage and the bedroom wing. Note whether you normally enter by the front door, a courtyard door or the garage, and whether the garage entry has its own lock. Do not pry at a frame beside a glass wall; a cracked pane is a bigger repair than the lockout.

In an apartment building, the door you are outside of may be a lobby entry, a gate or your unit door, and management may control the first two. Ask the manager whether they can let you in, and give your building and unit number.

A landlord lockout is a different matter. California Civil Code § 789.3 bars a landlord from willfully changing the locks or using a bootlock to force a tenant out.
