Does your San Jose door suit a smart lock?

Most smart deadbolts are made for a bored door: a round hole through the face and a smaller one into the edge. Measure the bore hole and backset and check them against the lock's listed fit before buying.

Older neighborhoods are the harder case. Naglee Park, east of S. 11th Street, was subdivided in 1902 and is known for bungalows and Spanish Colonial Revival homes. Doors of that age may have been prepared for a mortise lock, and a bored smart deadbolt will not fit one, so look for a mortise-style model.

Fairglen Additions houses in Willow Glen open onto courtyards through floor-to-ceiling glass. A glass or narrow-framed door may have no room for a bored deadbolt, so measure every exterior door, including the garage entry, before choosing a model.

Apartments and approvals

A renter should get the owner's or manager's approval before swapping a lock. In buildings covered by the city's Residential Occupancy Permit (San José Municipal Code 17.20.520), the inspection checklist allows no more than one security lock at the entry door. Temperature and a backup key

A keypad on a door in full afternoon sun runs hotter than one under a porch roof, so check the lock's listed operating temperature before mounting it on a sun-facing door.

• Replace batteries at the first low-battery warning rather than waiting for the keypad to go dark.
• Choose a model with a key cylinder or another override, and keep that key outside the house with someone you trust.
• Decide who else needs a code or key before the lock is set up.
