A locked car on a sweeping day

In San Jose, a car lockout can collide with the street sweeping schedule. A car with the keys locked inside cannot be driven away, and the posted signs still apply while you wait.

  • Residential streets are swept once a month on a set day, such as the first Monday.
  • Downtown, business districts and major arterials are swept two to four times a month, in a window between 2 a.m. and 11 a.m.
  • Cars parked where sweeping signs prohibit parking are cited, and cars in posted tow zones are towed and cited.
  • The restriction lasts the whole posted window, even after the sweeper has passed.

If you park overnight near downtown and find the keys locked inside in the morning, read the nearest sign before anything else and note its day and time window. A lockout at 7 a.m. in a posted tow zone is more pressing than the same lockout in a driveway. This is general information, not legal advice.

Heat and safety first

If a child or pet is locked in the car, call 911 now and do not wait for a locksmith. A closed car in direct sun can become dangerously hot, even on a day that feels mild outside. The same goes for anyone inside who cannot open the door themselves.

Once you have checked each door, leave them alone. Pulling on handles or prying at a window frame can bend trim and damage seals.

  • The day and time window on the nearest sweeping sign.
  • The year, make and model, and whether the keys are visible inside or locked in the trunk.
