Proof that the car is yours

A new key starts a car, so have ownership papers ready before one is cut or programmed.

• Photo ID with your name.
• The registration or title in your name, issued by your state motor-vehicle agency. If the car is registered to someone else, such as a spouse or an employer, have that person present or bring their written authorization.
• The vehicle identification number (VIN). It appears on the registration, on the driver's side of the dashboard where it meets the windshield, and usually on the door jamb.

If the only copy of the registration is locked in the car, say so when you ask.
