What counts as urgent here

Safety comes before any lock. Call 911 if a child, a pet or a vulnerable person is locked in a car or home, if someone is hurt, or if an intruder may still be inside.

Beyond that, Colorado Springs weather raises the stakes on some problems:

  • Shut out in the cold. Snow is a regular part of a Colorado Springs winter, and chinook-driven temperature swings can leave a night far colder than the afternoon. Being locked out without shelter on a winter evening is urgent. A stiff lock on a door you do not need tonight usually is not.
  • After a break-in. Call the police first and let them document the scene before anything is repaired. Then the priority is a door that closes and locks again, whether the damage is to the frame, a bolt or a cylinder.
  • A door that will not lock at night, such as a deadbolt that no longer throws.

Ask for the total, even in a hurry

House Bill 25-1090 added C.R.S. 6-1-737, effective January 1, 2026. A quoted amount must show the full total, mandatory fees included, as a single number. Where the total cannot reasonably be known in advance, such as a service that depends on distance or time, the business may instead disclose the factors that set the cost, any mandatory fees, and that the total may vary.

Two red flags on the Attorney General's contractor fraud list are a request for more than 10 percent of the cost up front and a demand for cash, gift cards or cryptocurrency. What to send

  1. Whether anyone is in danger, and whether 911 or the police have been called.
  2. The neighborhood and nearest cross streets.
  3. What happened: a lockout, a break-in, a failed lock or a broken key, plus any police report number.
  4. The door and lock type, with a photo if you can take one safely.
  5. Whether you have a warm place to wait.
