When a lockout meets a parking ban

In Bridgeport the street matters as much as the car, and a car lockout on the wrong street can end in a tow. During a declared snow emergency, two sets of rules apply.

• Posted snow emergency streets. These carry white signs with red lettering, and cars must be moved off them.
• All other streets. Parking switches to alternate sides by odd- or even-numbered addresses.

Vehicles that do not comply on either kind of street are towed. A car with the keys locked inside cannot be moved, so if a ban is about to start, say so at the top of the request. If a child or a pet is locked in the car, call 911 first, in any season.

• Winter. A car with the engine off loses its heat, and one with the engine running needs a clear tailpipe; plowed snow packed around it lets exhaust collect.
• Summer. A closed car in the sun heats far above the outside temperature, even on a mild day.

Wait somewhere sheltered rather than beside the car, especially on a posted snow emergency street, where the car itself should not be parked while the emergency lasts.
